Dr. Foundas is an academic physician-scientist and board certified neurologist with over 20 years of experience, including extensive experience caring for people with cognitive and memory disorders.

Dr. Foundas was raised in New Orleans, and graduated from the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans. She completed her Neurology residency and fellowship training in Behavioral Neurology and Neuropsychology at the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville. She served as Chief Resident of Neurology.

Dr. Foundas began her academic career at the Tulane University School of Medicine. She established a world-class research program in New Orleans, where she supervised the training of 50 graduate research students. Many are now leaders in academic and healthcare settings

Dr. Foundas has directed and administered many funded-research projects, totaling over 20 million dollars in direct costs. The National Institutes of Health, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Louisiana State Board of Regents, and many non-profit foundations have funded her research.

Dr. Foundas has extensive experience in medical education. She directed the Neurology Residency Training Program at Tulane University, supervising the training of over 85 physicians. As Vice-Chair of Clinical Research at the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans, she created the Brain and Behavior Program. During her tenure as Chair of the Department of Neurology and Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Missouri Kansas City School of Medicine, Dr. Foundas provided direct patient care, mentored and educated medical students, resident physicians, nurse practitioners, and allied health professionals in the practice of neurology.

Dr. Foundas has developed and directed interdisciplinary clinical programs in diverse healthcare settings, including building and directing a comprehensive cognitive and memory disorder clinic at Ochsner Health System. She was Medical Director of the Center for Neurology and Cognitive Neuroscience at the Truman Medical Centers, an 800-bed academic health-care system in Kansas City. Dr. Foundas is passionate about clinical care, research, and medical education.

Publications include over 200 scientific papers and a textbook titled, Clinical Neuroanatomy: A Neurobehavioral Approach, Springer Science and Business, Incorporated, New York, 2008. Dr. Foundas is the 2003 recipient of the prestigious Norman Geschwind Prize in Behavioral Neurology. Her clinical work has been recognized with the receipt of the Top Neurology Doctor Award in New Orleans and in Kansas City. She has been recognized for the highest level of patient satisfaction in neurology clinical services.

Dr. Foundas’ clinical practice focuses on patients with cognitive disorders. Her clinical research program focuses on speech, language, learning, memory, attention, and motor-control. Our current research strategy is to develop treatment programs to enhance functional independence in brain-injured children, adolescents, and adults. Her clinical mission is to promote brain health.
